The New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Awards (NZAS) are offered in recognition of the nation’s close cultural, economic and geographic ties with Southeast Asia. The objective of the postgraduate scholarships is to empower learners with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to the economic, social and political development of their countries.

The scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand government’s international aid and development programme. These scholars will be provided with full scholarships for their thesis, cost of research and cost of living.

The number of Vietnamese students opting to pursue a higher education in New Zealand for the first time increased by 67 percent in 2017; while the total number of students attending schools in New Zealand increased by 75 percent.

Also, there is an increase in higher education cooperation between the two countries in 2017 with one of the most notable events being the memorandum of understanding signing ceremony on cybersecurity, computer science and environmental security between the University of Waikato and the People’s Security Academy of Vietnam.
