Chulalongkorn University (CU), the only university in Thailand to make it to the Top 50

Chulalongkorn University (CU) is the only university in Thailand to be ranked in the top 50 QS Asia University Rankings this year, while other top universities have witnessed a significant drop in their university rankings.

Despite CU’s achievement, there is still a noticeable fall in its ranking from the 45th to 50th position among 450 universities across Asia. Universities that also witnessed a fall in rankings include:

  • Chiang Mai University (CMU), from 104th to 112th
  • Kasetsart University, from 129th to 149th
  • King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, from 161st to 171st
  • Khon Kaen University, from 165th to 178th
  • Prince of Songkhla University, from 188th to 185th
  • King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, from 251st to 261st
  • Suranaree University of Technology, from 251st to 301st

Despite the slip among top Thai universities, two institutions did manage to make remarkable improvements. They are the Mahidol University (MU) which now stands at 58th place as it rose three spots from the previous year. Thammasat University is another institution that climbed to the 97th place from the previous 101st.

Suphat Champatong, secretary-general of the Office of Higher Education Commission (Ohec) attributed the universities’ drop in performance to two factors (1) lack of English research publications (2) teaching professionals with relevant academic credentials. Currently, only one-third of Thai university lecturers have accreditation such as assistant professor, associate professor or professor in comparison to that of world-leading universities.
