Maria Klawe is currently a Mathematician and President of Harvey Mudd College. Klawe pursued a doctorate in computer science at the University of Toronto despite having no experience of using a computer. However, she was so good at it that eventually the university offered her a role as a professor at the institution. Prior to the pursuit of a computer science degree, Klawe obtained a PhD in Math and is driven to thrive in a male-dominated sector.

For the past 11 years, Klawe served as the President of Harvey Mudd College – a small liberal arts institution known for its intensive STEM focus where the number of women in its computer science program has expanded from 10 percent to 40 percent. Klawe is not only a famous computer scientist and scholar, but also the first woman to lead the college since its founding in 1955.

Klawe has made several compelling research contributions in the area of mathematics and computer science, with her current research focus being on discrete mathematics. In addition, Klawe is an acclaimed lecturer and has given talks at international conferences, national symposia and colleges across the United States and Canada on topics in relation to the STEM field and lessons her own career in STEM industry and education.

  • Ranked 17 on Fortune’s 2014 list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders
  • Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of Computer Science in 2015
  • Honored with Achievement Award from the American Association of University Women in 2015
  • Conscripted into the US News STEM Solutions Leadership Hall of Fame in 2015
  • Honored by the Computing Research Association’s 2016 Distinguished Service Award
