Students today live in a dynamic and globalised world, therefore they will need to cultivate a global and intercultural outlook that education can shape. Globally competent individuals can examine local, global and intercultural issues, comprehend and cherish different perspectives and worldviews, connect successfully with others and take responsible actions towards sustainability and collective well-being.

Schools play a fundamental role in cultivating global competency among youth. They allow youth to critically look into global developments that are important to the society and educate learners how to critically, effectively and responsibly use digital information and social media platforms. Institutions not only help promote intercultural sensitivity and respect, they are also uniquely positioned to advance youth’s ability to understand their place in the community and the world and enhance their capacity to make judgements and take action.

Education for global competence develop cultural awareness and respectful interactions in a global community. It also builds on the understanding of different models of global education such as intercultural education, global citizenship education and education for democratic citizenship. Despite differences in their focus and scope, these models share a common goal to promote students’ understanding of the world and empower them to express their views and participate in society.

“Competence” is not merely a specific skill but is a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values successfully applied to face-to-face, virtual or mediated encounters with people who are perceived to be from different cultural background and to individuals’ experiences of global issues.
