“Siti Maya” – first and fastest mobile lab in Malaysia

Malaysia – Siti Maya, the first built-in-Malaysia mobile lab was launched by the Chief Minister of Terengganu on March 29, 2016. Built to accommodate 21 people, this 14.7 meters long and 4.8 meters wide boat can reach a maximum speed of 10 knots making it the fastest moving mobile lab houseboat in Malaysia.

Fitted with two bedrooms, generator rooms, a pilot house and open lab space, Siti Maya was sponsored by Dato’ Ghazali Dato’ Mohd Yusof from Nusantara Technologies Sdn Bhd. The idea of the mobile lab was mooted by Dr Faizah Sharoum, director of Kenyir Research Institute (IPK), designed by Assoc Prof Dr Eng Ahmad Fitriadhy from the School of Ocean Engineering, and building began in June 2015 by Brazen Composites Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Aquatic ecology, limnology, bathymetry, and water quality are just some of the research topics to be undertaken by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) on Lake Kenyir. Siti Maya is open for use by local as well as international researchers and also for tourists, and will generate income for UMT.
