University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) continues to exhibit unwavering commitment towards its students by developing them into highly employable candidates.
Boost to placements and entrepreneurship
For the academic year 2016-2017, 70% of eligible students have already been placed three months ahead of their graduation. Besides excellent placement track record UPES is promoting entrepreneurship amongst its students on campus. To support students who wish to take entrepreneurial route UPES will provide them placement support even after two years of graduating in case for some reason they choose to find a job.
Commenting on the new initiatives, Utpal Ghosh, President and CEO, UPES, said, “With the new placement policy in place we urge our students to follow their entrepreneurial dreams by giving them a choice to return to their alma mater for placement support. UPES has an incubation centre at campus that provides end-to-end assistance and guidance to students who want to do something of their own. We encourage entrepreneurship and innovation in our students as it is not just about running a successful business; entrepreneurial skills are required if you are in a job or even in day-to-day life.”
Industry-aligned programs at UPES
UPES’ strong industry connect, campus infrastructure that facilitates enriching learning experience and exceptional faculty is helping students carve a niche for themselves. The University has academic collaborations with IBM, Xebia, L&T and others leading organizations. It is offering 13 specialized B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering programs in collaboration with IBM. It has launched two new B.Tech specializations in DevOps and Big Data in association with Netherland based Xebia. UPES-CISCO Networking Academy association adds to learning of B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering students and training of faculty by CISCO certified trainers to impart specialized courses. B.Tech Civil Engineering with specialization in Infrastructure is in academic collaboration with L&T.
At UPES, not only students but even faculty members go for internships to bridge academia-industry disconnect. These internships help faculty frame courses and curriculum that is more application-driven and relevant. This year over 50 UPES faculty members will go for summer internships.
Focus on research
Faculty members are also involved in impressive national and international research projects that have many positive implications on various sectors. For instance, faculty members Dr. Girdhar Joshi, Devendra S. Rawat, Amit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Jitendra K. Pandey have reported their findings regarding ‘Microwave enhanced chemically activated waste egg shell derived catalyst for Biodiesel production from non-edible oils (algal, jatropha and pongamia)’. UPES is also leading an Indo- French consortium of academic institutions and industry players to collaborate on Project ‘Swachh Neer – Une Vie Meilleure’ (A better life).
Equipped with domain knowledge and mentored by veteran professors UPES students have been proving their mettle at prestigious events and competitions- be it winning Lockheed Martin competition along with IIT Madras; making India proud by grabbing first position in Europe and Asia at CanSat 2016 or building awards tally to over 135 in numerous legal competitions.
