FKG UNAIR holds first summer course program

UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA NEWS – Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga made another breakthrough on Friday, June 14, 2019. A closing ceremony was held for the completion of Short Term-Summer Course Program attended by two students from Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

They are Petra Norbertine Broshuis and Teresia Agnes Anna Maria Bremers, two students from Radboud University, the Netherlands, who had the opportunity to become the first graduates of Short Term-Summer Course Program held by FKG UNAIR in the middle of 2019.

“We are very happy for the opportunity given to join the learning process here, because in our place of origin (Radboud University, ed) there is no Public Health Dentistry,” Agnes shared her impression in the FKG UNAIR Dean Meeting Room.

This Short Term-Summer Course program by Department of Community Dental Health (IKGM) was the first international short program. The Short Term-Summer Course Program, Dynamic Integrated Education in Oral Health Community Empowerment Program was attended by Agnes and Petra well, and they managed to achieve excellent results.

“Both Agnes and Petra, managed to prove themselves that as international students, they can play an active and major role in the learning process of Indonesian local communities, especially Surabaya,” explained Dr. Taufan Bramantoro, drg., M.Kes as Head of FKG UNAIR IKGM Department.

“Evidently, the achievement indicator scores are good. They even managed to teach some Dutch in women community in Keputih,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Darmawan Setijanto, drg., M.Kes, as Dean of FKG UNAIR, shared the background of the summer course program initiation.

“We offer innovative and interesting dentistry education in FKG UNAIR. It is stated in FKG UNAIR Preceptorship we always disseminate to the global community at any international events we attend, “said Darmawan.

The FKG UNAIR Preceptorship offers detailed programs and competencies that will be achieved by prospective international students in Dynamic Integrated Education program in the Oral Health Community Empowerment Program. So far, hundreds of FKG UNAIR preceptorships have been spread to international universities around the world.

“We always offer our preceptorship at many international events. Thank God, we always meet prospective colleagues and students who are very enthusiastic in asking about our program, “said Dr. Irma J. Savitri, drg., Sp. Perio (K)., Ph.D. as Head of International Relations FKG UNAIR.

Gilang R. Sabdho Wening, drg., M.Kes as PJMK Professional Education IKHM Department UNAIR stated that this international program of IKGM Department is an international version of the dental health empowerment program.

“In the end, international students will also be assessed on their ability to analyze the dental and oral health of their community, how to do dissemination in the classroom, and propose what programs are appropriate to improve the dental health status of the community,” said Gilang.

“These indicators of learning achievement will be summarized and adapted from the latest global-international competence achievement framework in the world,” he added.

In addition to the program education, Petra and Agnes also conducted cultural and social exploration of communities in Surabaya by visiting several Posyandu (Integrated Health Service Post), historical sites, and also trying to interact with local residents in the suburbs.

“We were quite surprised to see the fact that the locals have a good understanding of oral health, but the children’s teeth are worrying, a lot of dental caries. It turned out that they brush their teeth only once a day, “said Petra in a dissemination session in class with lecturers and students.
