A delegation of the GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, visited the Beijing, China on the invitation of the Beijing Technology and Business University (BTBU) from November 8th to November 10th, 2019.
The delegation was headed by Mr. Shakil Durrani, executive director of SOPREST and Engr. Jehangir Bashar, rector, GIK Institute along with two faculty members from the faculty of computer science and engineering. The delegation was warmly welcomed by officials from the BTBU and the Pakistan study center of science and technology and economy. A dinner was also hosted in honor of the visiting delegation by Mr. Huang Xiankai, communist party secretary, BTBU.
The visiting delegation participated in the 4th Forum for China-Pakistan Cooperation for Science and Technology and Economy held on the 9th of November, 2019, in which Mr. Shakil Durrani was an invited speaker. Mr. Durrani introduced the SOPREST and GIK Institute to the forum, its unique nature as a fully residential campus, and the quality of education imparted to students. He also emphasized on various areas of collaboration between universities in Pakistan and China, particularly in areas of food, water, and climate change research. The forum was attended by several Chinese and Pakistani universities. Later, during the technical sub-forum on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Dr. Fawad Hussain, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FCSE), gave a talk introducing the faculty, its research areas in AI, and future directions. The sub-forum was attended by several experts from Chinese universities as well as the Beijing Association of Artificial Intelligence.
On November 10th, the executive director of SOPREST, Mr. Shakil Durrani, and the Rector of GIK Institute, Engr. Jehangir Khan Bashar, visited the School of Computer and Information Engineering at BTBU. President of BTBU, Prof. Sun Baoguo, met and welcomed the delegation. He introduced the school to the members of the delegation and said that his university attaches great importance to exchanges and cooperation with Pakistani universities. On this occasion, the rector of GIK Institute, Engr. Jehangir Bashar, thanked the president for the warm welcome. The rector introduced the GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, and emphasized the need to have closer collaboration between the two universities. He appreciated that the faculty members from computing departments of the two universities had identified several areas of common interest and collaboration including joint research funding, joint publications, and exchange of students and faculty. The rector extended an invitation to the president of BTBU and other senior officials to visit the GIK Institute and also expressed his desire for both universities to a have joint center.
A MoU was signed between the rector of GIK Institute and president of BTBU which will pave the way for collaboration between the two universities. The MoU signing ceremony was also attended by Mr. Muhammad Suleiman, Education attaché at the embassy of Pakistan to China, Dr. Fawad Hussain and Dr. Sajid Anwar from the faculty of computer science and engineering at the GIK Institute, Dr. Liu Ying, director of the international exchange and cooperation division at BTBU, Dr. Yu Chongchong and Dr. Tan Li from the school of computing and information engineering, Dr. Di Yuna, executive director of the Pakistan study venter, Dr. Ni Guohua, dean of the school of economics at BTBU, and Ms. Song Fangfei, coordinator of international programs at BTBU.
