Omar M Al-Jarrah is the sixth president of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and a professor of computer engineering.

Professor Al-Jarrah received his BSc in electrical engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Irbid, Jordan in 1991, and his MSc and PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Ohio State University in 1994 and 1996, respectively. He has progressed through several academic leadership positions including the chairperson of Computer Engineering at JUST (1998–2000), dean of Computer and Information Technology Faculty at JUST (2000–2004), assistant to the president and CIO at JUST (2004–2010), vice president at JUST (2010–2013), president of Amman Arab University (2014–2016), and president of JUST (2016–present).

Professor Al-Jarrah was the founding chairperson of the Computer Engineering Department and the founding dean of the Computer and Information Technology Faculty at JUST, guiding its transformation into an integrated digital campus by leveraging information and communication technology in all aspects of the university life.

President Al-Jarrah has expanded innovation and industrial outreach at JUST through a transformation programme that focuses on four I’s: innovation, industry, interdisciplinary, and internationalisation. He has expanded research funding, broadened the university’s international reach, embraced sustainability, fostered online learning, and promoted collaboration across academic disciplines and administrative units. He has adopted a number of strategic projects to improve the financial sustainability of the university. Under his leadership, JUST has advanced in QS rating from three stars to five and has made a big leap in THE ranking from 601–800 to 401–500; joining the top 500 league in the 2018 THE University Rankings.

Professor Al-Jarrah has taught courses in artificial intelligence, computer networks, operating systems, microprocessor systems design, and neural and fuzzy computing. His research interests include robotics, intelligent systems, and wireless networks. He has published 70 technical papers in well-reputed international journals and conferences. During his career, he has supervised more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students. He has chaired and co-chaired several international conferences and has served in editorial boards and as associated editor for international journals. Prof Al-Jarrah has managed several national and international research grants that valued more than US$5,000,000.

Professor Al-Jarrah has served as a consultant and ICT advisor to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UNESCO Amman office, King Abdullah University Hospital, and a number of private organisations. He has served in various national ICT committees and has been leading the development of Education Management Information Systems at JUST, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

He has also served in editorial boards and as associated editor for international journals, as well as reviewer of national and international entities, programmes, and journals. He has been also heavily engaged in many committees including the university council, ABET Accreditation, community outreach, strategic planning committees, and industrial consultancy.

Professor Al-Jarrah has received several national and international awards in recognition of his achievements.
