Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) has a long-term vision (2018-2045) to become a techno-socio-entrepreneurial university. This vision has been developed in response to a need in the developing regions of the world for universities to collaborate with their governments and the community to promote regional economic development and national and global competitiveness.
IPB plays an important role on Indonesia’s national innovation systems, notably in the field of tropical agriculture, marine sciences, bio-sciences and environmental sciences. At IPB multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are applied to address complex and uncertain challenges and seize opportunities both in the present and the future.
IPB is not only well-known for its remarkably diverse range of education programs, but it is also recognised for its research–based teaching and its outstanding campus environment. IPB can be considered as a world-class university because the most recent (2018) QS World University Ranking by Subject included IPB in the Top 100 for the “Agriculture and Forestry’ subject. Moreover, the QS University Rankings: Asia 2018 placed IPB among the top 130 universities in Asia.
IPB has nine faculties, namely Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Fisheries and Marine Science, Animal Science, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Economics and Management, and Human Ecology, and three schools, namely the Business School, Graduate School, and Vocational School. More than 70% of undergraduate study programs completed an international accreditation or certification from various international institutions such as ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), IUFoST (World Congress of Food Science and Technology), IFT (Institute of Food Technologists), SWST (Society of Wood Science and Technology), JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education), IMAREST (The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology), AUN-QA (ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance), ABEST21 (The Alliance on Business Education and Scholarship for Tomorrow) and JABEE (Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education).
In terms of its research and innovation activities, IPB has been recognized as the institution with the highest innovation output in Indonesia for 11 consecutive years. In recognition of this IPB received the Intellectual Property Award from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia as the university with the largest number of registered patents (2012), the most commercialised patent (2015), the best foreign research partners (2016–2018), the most productive Intellectual Property Office (2016 and 2017), and the first rank in the Widyapadhi Awards from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (2017–2018). In addition, IPB’s innovation holding company, namely PT Bogor Life Science and Technology (BLST), also received the Intellectual Property Enterprise Trophy 2017 from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The recognition of its innovation achievements is tangible progress towards IPB’s vision of becoming a techno-socio-entrepreneurial university.
