Three Researchers from Thammasat and Mahidol University Received Brand’s Health Award 2019

Three researchers from Thammasat and Mahidol University developed herbal anti-oral cancer gel, treatment for Parkinson’s disease, and supplement from fermented soybean.

Faculty of Pharmacy, Silpakorn University, Mahidol’s Nutrition Club, Royal Thai Army Nursing College, and Thai Dietetic Association, ‎Faculty of Oriental Medicine, Rangsit University, Faculty of Nursing, Kasem Bundit University and Brand Health held a nutrition conference “Brand Health Conference 2019” under the topic “Food and Nutrition for Brain”. The main purpose is to encourage food and nutrition knowledge for brain and publish research work and innovation for better brain health and quality of life. The conference is free of charge for medical personnel and public health officers. There were more than 400 doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists, nurses, scientists and academicians attended at Sayammakudratchakumarn room, 50 years building.

Prof.Kaittikun Ph.D.Jomjak Jantthasakul, Chairman of the Board Committee on Brand Research Scholarship, Brand’s Health Award 2019, reveals that we want to support and encourage research work and new innovation in healthcare services. In the Brand’s Health Conference 2019 “Food and Nutrition for Brain”, Princess Soamsawali assigned M.R.Somlarp Kitiyakorn to be a representative, open the conference ceremony, and give research scholarship. The conference has been held since 2001 and giving out more than 60 scholarships.

This year, there are 3 researchers who got the scholarship which are

  1. Prof.Phd.D.Viphavee Nittayananta, Faculty of Dentistry, Thammasat University (TU), presented Development of gel containing plant- derived compounds with anti-oral cancer activity research. The causes of oral cancer are betel chewing, smoking, drinking alcohol, and HPV-16 infection. According to the study, mangosteen skin and pomegranate skin extract can prevent virus infection and do not cause oral mucositis. Therefore, researcher wants to develop plant-based gel that can reduce oral cancer risk in smokers, drinker, betel chewers, and people who are prone to infect HPV-16. Moreover, it will add value to agriculture products as well.
  2. Assoc.Prof.Duangdao Chantasart, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University, presented Iontophoresis of pramipexole transdermal delivery for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is the second most prevalent of neurodegeneration disease, after Alzheimer’s disease. It is common in people who are above 60 years old. Patients will have slow and imbalanced movement, tremor or shaking, and loss of automatic movements. In addition, patients might have difficulty sleeping, unstable or swinging mood and behaviors, and dementia. It will degrade their working, quality of life, and life expectancy. Therefore, this study focuses on appropriate time for Iontophoresis of pramipexole transdermal delivery, including PH scale, concentration of medication solution, and electric currency for the future treatment of Parkinson’s patients.
  3. Asst.Prof.Pornrat JIntarit, Department of Tropical Nutrition and Food Science, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, presented Studying short chain fatty acid occurring in fermenting process soybean meal in food “Thua-nao” from natural microbiome for usefulness in health and nutrition and their impact on human metabolism. The main objective is to study and differentiate bacteria in fermented soybean (Thua Nao). Researcher wants to find the advantages of Metabolite, study short chain fatty acid, and regulate Histone deacetylase (HDAC) expression. In the past, there were no systematic study on fermented soybean. Therefore, this research work allows us to understand and develop fermented soybeans to be a supplementary product for older people and use microbiome in food and medicine industry.
