A three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. was signed by Emeritus Professor Datuk Ir. Dr. Mohd Azraai Kassim, Vice-Chancellor of UiTM and Mr. Hiroshi Hamada, Managing Director of Yakult Malaysia at Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery Building, UiTM Shah Alam on 2 July 2020.
The MoU signing was witnessed by Associate Professor Dr. Mohad Anizu Mohd Nor, Dean of the Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation (FSR) and Mazlyn Mena, Associate Director Public Relations and Science Department of Yakult Malaysia.
The Vice-Chancellor of UiTM said “The benefits of working together are many including creating synergy for effective implementation and achieving the University mission and vision. Also, this kind of partnership brings optimism that facilitates for the betterment of students, staff, and UiTM at large”.
He also added that he wished to see improvements made in teaching, research-work and service provision resulting from smart industry partnerships such as the one with Yakult Malaysia so that in due time UiTM will become a reference point for others as a source of best practices not just in the ASEAN region but on a wider global stage.
Reciprocating the sentiments of the Vice-Chancellor of UiTM, Mr. Hiroshi Hamada expressed that Yakult Malaysia is proud to be one of UiTM working partners and this is the first MoU signing with a university in Malaysia. He also believed that this move is essential for both academia and industry to work together to raise the standard of education, research, and graduates for the benefits of the nation.
The MoU will commit both UiTM and Yakult Malaysia to work more closely together towards promoting business and academic cooperation among other things in the following areas:
- exchange of information pertaining to medical health, nutrition, sports science, and food development;
- create opportunities for future joint or allied funding activities and projects that benefit both parties.
FSR, UiTM has been building rapport with Yakult Malaysia actively prior to the signing of this MoU through various collaborative activities such as Jom Jalan 1000 Langkah, public lectures on probiotic sciences, research set-ups and student entrepreneurship programs. Therefore, the signing of this MoU is timely to establish an even closer tie between FSR and Yakult to create more opportunities particularly through joint or allied activities and projects that would enrich students’ learning experience and enhance their marketability in related industries.
Acknowledging Yakult’s reputation as an industry leader in probiotics and beyond, FSR is committed to working together with Yakult Malaysia towards the common goal of inspiring people to lead a healthy lifestyle.
FSR was established in 1995 making UiTM the first institution of higher learning in Malaysia to offer a program in the field of Sport Science, Sport Management, Recreation & Leisure. FSR now offers 8 academic programs ranging from diploma to Doctor of Philosophy programs in line with the aspiration of the faculty to be the main contributor of highly skilled professionals for the sports-related industry.
