The Communication platform between students and the management is a big challenge at the Faculty of Computer & Mathematical Sciences (FSKM), Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM), Malaysia sometimes. The commonly used platforms to convey information to students were through social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as WhatsApp and Telegram.

Due to this, FSKM’s Dr. Izzad Ramli, a senior lecturer at the faculty decided to innovate and develop an app called “KitaFSKM” in early March 2020. His successful innovation is now available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The initial objective of the innovation was only to provide information on students’ related activities via the app. However, amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, the app has broadened its application to also provide academic and current information from the faculty’s management.

In these changing times, students use their mobile phones for almost all purposes, where they get access to any information from anywhere, at the touch of their fingertips. Based on this trend, students will benefit heavily from this app in several ways such as accessibility to information and receiving updates on the latest issues, both at the faculty and university level. In addition, special features such as ‘push notifications’ and ‘instant update’ also help notify the students immediately on the latest news via their mobile phones. KitaFSKM app also has a ‘news finder’ feature which can ease the news searching process for its users such as information related to internship placements, job opportunities and graduate employability.

As of June 10, 2020, more than 1,100 students have downloaded and signed up for this faculty’s very own mobile application. For further enhancement, this new innovation will be constantly upgraded over time. It is hoped that this application will be the best communication platform among all students, lecturers, and the FSKM management in forming a community that is interconnected.  Dr. Izzad hopes that “the usage of KitaFSKM app will be fully utilized by all FSKM UiTM students and hope to expand to other UiTM campuses as well”. He hopes that the app will ultimately serve as a medium of information delivery to all UiTM students in Malaysia.
